College, Whats The Big Deal?
There are some that would debate the benefit of a college education in the "real world" of business. It is true that a good many graduates are hired after obtaining their degree only to find themselves working in an environment that applies a very small portion of what they studied and learned during college. Perhaps this is why there is a debate at all. There are those that feel that college is a good thing, but not necessary to be successful in the business world. We will not attempt to further that debate. We will instead discuss three ways that college is beneficial.
College Helps To Determine Career Direction
It is a difficult decision determining what field an individual will choose to work in for the rest of their life. Short of choosing a spouse, the career choice is most likely the most crucial and important decision one will make in life. College study, especially the general education classes, exposes students to a variety of fields allowing them an opportunity to educate themselves to the possibilities available.
A wise course of action would be to attend college and complete general education classes until a specific career can be chosen. Once a career is chosen the student having completed their general studies is now ready to move forward with specific classes, aimed at achieving a particular degree, advancing them to their ultimate career goals.
A College Education Sets An Individual Apart
A college degree may seem to some a waste of time. That is, of course, until it is time to interview for a job. Those with more education and credentials typically set themselves apart from the rest of the applicants. This has never been more true than right now in the current economic condition. The unemployment rate is currently at about ten percent.
There has not been this type of competition for jobs in our country for many years. It is expressly for this purpose that a great many individuals are deciding to go back to college and seek more steady employment. As mentioned before, the more education an individual has received, the more job security they are able to enjoy.
Money
It is a general rule of thumb that the more education an individual has the more money they will make. Whether it is a bank employee or an elementary school teacher, companies and institutions are willing to pay individuals more money in relation to their level of education. After all, money is a big part of why one works. There can be no question as to whether or not getting a college education is beneficial to the individual. Knowledge truly is power.
