Senior Retirement Plans

It is a difficult decision for family members to move their loved one to a care facility. For many families, the worry tends to be about the quality of care that their loved one will receive and their overall happiness. The decision of which care facility becomes extremely important not only for the physical and emotional needs of the patient, but for the peace of mind for their families as well.

Choosing a care facility can seem difficult. In many communities there are a wide variety of choices to help narrow that search and to help families make an informed decision that they can feel comfortable and confident about in an otherwise difficult and sensitive situation.

Location

Perhaps one of the most important factors for families to consider when choosing a care facility for their elderly loved one is the location of the care facility in relation to the family or at least one member of the family. It is a good idea when possible to have the care facility closest to the family member that will have the ability to visit and help take care of the patient. For example, if one of the children is retired or has more time available for daily or at least weekly visits, it would be better to be closer to that family member.

Level of Care

Another factor that is important to consider is the level of care in relation to the medical needs of the patient. Some patients are advanced in certain illnesses or conditions and will require more medical care. Each facility offers a different level of care. Be sure to learn and become educated to the different programs and their medical care capabilities.

Program and Lifestyle

In addition the medical care program is important to match the program and the lifestyle of the patient. Some patients are very independent and if their medical condition allows it, they would be happier with a more independent type of living situation. Also, some patients prefer a facility with social interaction with other patients which will help to avoid loneliness and depression.

Again it is important to become educated on the different programs and take into consideration the personality and needs of the individual patients. Whenever possible it would be wise to involve the patient in the decision making process as much as possible.

Cost

One of the most important factors of choosing and deciding on a care facility is the cost. Some care facilities, depending on the services offered, can cost several thousand dollars a month, while others may cost half that. It is important to decide as a family how the care will be paid for and who will be paying what.
