Three Simple Ways To Prevent Illness
It is important, especially during the cold and flu season, that we try to do all we can to prevent illness and the spread of germs. We will discuss three simple ways that we as individuals can do to help to prevent illness for ourselves and our families
Wash Your Hands
Probably the easiest and most important way to prevent the spread of germs and illness is to wash our hands. It is through our hands that we have the most physical contact with those we associate with. It is also the more common place that germs are collected and passed on to those around us.
It is most effective to wash hands with soap and hot water. A person washing their hands should scrub for at least thirty seconds before rinsing. It is also important to dry hands with a paper towel, not a cloth towel, which may be full of germs. If it isn't possible to wash hands with hot water and soap, an alternative would be hand sanitizer (made up of at least 60 percent alcohol). Although better than nothing, most hand sanitizers are not as effective as most people believe them to be. Washing hands is a very effective way to prevent the spread of germs.
Get At Least Seven Hours Of Sleep
In our fast paced world we live in, often we sacrifice one of the more important elements of our overall health. We sacrifice the amount of sleep we give our bodies. During the period of sleep our body is busy at work repairing itself. Sleeping also allows us to rest our muscles and other tissue as well as the time when our bodies fight infections and illness.
If we don't allow ourselves a sufficient amount of sleep, it is only a matter of time before we will become sick and lethargic. Eight hours is the suggested amount of sleep for an adult. Children and teens often will require more as their bodies and brains are still developing.
Diet And Exercise
Our bodies are truly amazing. They act almost as a complicated machine. Any machine requires energy to run. It doesn't take an ASE certified auto mechanic to know that if a person doesn't put gas in their car it won't run. The engine requires fuel to run and function properly.
So it is with our bodies. If we don't eat healthy our bodies can't perform properly. If we don't feed our body properly it cannot fight off infection as effective. In addition to a healthy diet, it is important that we exercise regularly. By keeping our body in good physical shape we help to create energy that can help fight against illness and fatigue.
