How To Potty Train Your Dog

There are a lot of people that choose to enroll their dogs in obedience school and anticipate their dog will be potty trained as part of the training course. The success, of course, typically varies and there are an abundance of factors that play a role in how well your pet performs.

There are many people that prefer to take on the task of potty training their pets themselves. Not only is it possible for a pet owner to potty train their dog, it is likely that through the process, the owner and pet build a special bond. There are several tips or techniques to consider when potty training or house breaking your dog.

Consistency

Pets are not unlike children in the sense that they learn rules and procedures best by consistent training schedule and consistency in both reward and punishments. Dogs, like people, seem to respond much better to a reward for good behavior then to punishment for failing to perform properly. This is a vital rule in training your pet.

Have A Set Plan

Being consistent is important, but you, of course, must have a plan to be consistent with. A plan may include taking your dog to the area that you expect them to do their "business" and place their droppings from previous outings. Also, pay attention to your pet's behavior. Often they will act a certain way when they need to go to the bathroom. When you notice this behavior, be quick to show interest and take them to the door and then out to the previous chosen spot. Also, frequenting the potty spot throughout the day can help the dog to understand where you would like him to use the bathroom.

Rewards

When the dog completes the task successfully the first time, make sure your produce a treat or some other type of reward immediately so they know what they are being rewarded for. Again, positive reinforcement is often the most effective way to help them understand the importance of the task you wish them to complete.

Patience

Typically, a dog can be potty trained within days by using the above mentioned techniques. It is important for you as the trainer, however, to have patience with the dog. It is almost indefinite that the dog will have an accident or two. Do not punish the dog for an accident, just as you wouldn't punish a child for having an accident. Be patient, kind, and firm when potty training your dog. Training your pet can be a lot of work and can prove to be very time consuming and at times, frustrating. However, you will develop a trust between you and your pet and when you achieve success you will most certainly feel like you have mad the right choice.
