Helping Your Troubled Teen

When a teen decides that his family is heading in a direction that he no longer agrees with, troubled is on the horizon. The parting of ways can be very traumatic for both parents and child. The battle soon begins to take its toll in the child's education, safety, and health. Let's look at the education portion first.

The troubled teen will typically begin to let his education slip and even begin to skip school. If a child determines that he is not going to participate in the education system any longer the parents will be mandated to get involved. This can take its toll on parents as they become more involved. It is a well known fact that academic administration and the legal system hold the parents responsible for their child's actions.

Your Childs Safety

The next point to consider is the troubled teen's safety. The danger can come in many forms. A troubled teen is usually involved in abusing drugs. The dangerous habit of drug addiction has ruined the lives of many of today's youth. The mere danger of the drugs being used pails in comparison to the way a troubled teen may financially support his habit.

Many parents are surprised to find that their child is not only using drugs, but is selling them. Obviously selling drugs is a large step from some casual abuse. A drug dealer associates with some pretty unsavory characters. The child is also in danger of some type of drug overdose. A teen experimenting with drugs may take more than their body can handle. It is not uncommon on any weekend to see teens checked into hospitals with alcohol poisoning. This is very dangerous but alcohol is readily available to a troubled teen looking for a way to get a buzz.

Show Support

Always be supportive to your teen that is experiencing depression. They must be able to look to you as a support and ally as they battle through this difficult period of their life. This is not a time for finger-pointing or blaming the teen or anyone in the family. This is a time that the teen needs all of the love and support they can get from their friends and family. Help relieve the stress in their life. It may be appropriate to have them cut loose some extracurricular activities in their life, even if you are against it, so they can focus on schoolwork and the basics of their life and overcome depression.

Your Teens Health

The final topic we will discuss is the health of the troubled teen. A troubled teen that is trying to keep up with their negative friends will in many cases be pushing their health to the very limits. Teen's that parties most of the night and then has to be up early for school or work is pushing the envelope. The teen is then forced to use some type of drug or energy booster to make it through the day. This unhealthy lifestyle can be very harmful.

The best antidote for the troubled teen is a parent's unconditional love and sincere desire to be involved in the teen's life. A parent that stays close to their child as they are growing up will have much more success than trying to become included when the child reaches the age of 12 or 13. When a parent teen relationship has already been established and is continually nurtured the chances of raising a successful teen increase dramatically.
